horse riding & canyon trips in Sharm El Sheikh

A climber bracing against both walls of a narrow sandstone canyon

The beach and desert horse rides and the Canyon Salama day trip all come with hotel pickup.

Horse riding on the beach takes 1 hour, along the shoreline north of Nabq. You ride in the shallows with a riding guide alongside, and beginners are welcome. Rides go at 08:00, 09:00, 16:00 and 17:00, and the 17:00 ride finishes as the sun goes down. It's $44.

Horse riding in the desert uses the same horses, taken inland across the wadi. Rides go at 08:00, 16:00 and 17:00, for $29. The operator says the early ride is the cooler one.

Canyon Salama is the full day by jeep: about 10 hours, leaving at 07:00 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. You walk through the canyon on foot with a guide for about ninety minutes. The day also takes in a camel ride, a snorkel stop in the Red Sea and lunch in Dahab. By 4×4 it's $33, or $39 with a quad ride added.

How to choose: the beach ride for the sea and a sunset, the desert ride if you'd rather ride inland. Both rides are short enough to fit round a beach day. The canyon takes the whole day, so give it one.
