Sharm El Sheikh sits at the southern tip of Sinai, on the other side of the Gulf of Suez from the Nile valley. The Pyramids are a long way away, but not out of reach. The Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum trip leaves at 22:00, on Tuesday and Friday, and you're back around 20:00 the next day: about 22 hours in all, with hotel pickup. In between you get a full day at Giza with an Egyptologist guide. Before anything else, read the visa section below: the free stamp most visitors get on arrival in Sharm does not cover Cairo.
What the day covers
The day itself is in and around Giza, on the western edge of Cairo. The trip page lists everything that is included:
- An Egyptologist guide for the whole day, which matters at sites where every stone has a story.
- Entry to the Giza plateau and the Sphinx. The three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure stand together on the plateau, with the Sphinx below them.
- Grand Egyptian Museum tickets. The museum stands near the plateau and opened fully in November 2025, with the Tutankhamun collection among its galleries.
- A Nile boat ride, a welcome hour on the water after the dust of the plateau.
- Lunch and time at the old market for a walk and some shopping.
- Hotel pickup and drop-off in Sharm.
It is a lot for one day, and the guide sets the pace. Expect to see the pyramids from close up and from the viewpoints, rather than to spend hours inside one site. If you want long, slow museum time, Cairo deserves a stay of its own; this trip is for people who want to stand in front of the pyramids at least once without leaving their Sinai holiday.
By bus or by flight: what changes
The day at Giza is the same on both tickets. What changes is how you get there and how much of the night you spend on the road.
| By bus | By flight | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $119 | $292 |
| Journey | Overnight coach each way | A one-hour flight each way |
| Departure on the timetable | 22:00 | 22:00 |
| Suits | Travellers who sleep easily on the road and want to keep the cost down | Families, anyone who doesn't sleep on coaches, and people on a short holiday |
Both tickets share the same departure time on the timetable, and the operator's confirmation gives the exact pickup details. With the coach, the trip is long but simple: you sleep on the way there, wake up near Cairo, and come back tired but with the whole thing done. With the flight, the travel takes much less of the day, but you still have airport security at both ends, so it is not a lie-in either way.
The drive across Sinai
By road it is roughly 500 km from Sharm to Cairo. The coach heads north up the Sinai coast of the Gulf of Suez, with the sea on one side and the dark South Sinai mountains on the other, then crosses under the Suez Canal, from Asia into Africa, before the long approach into the city. Most of it happens in the dark, so you will see little of the desert on the way out. There are police checkpoints on the main roads, which is normal in Egypt: keep your passport with you, not in the bag in the hold.
Visa: the Sinai stamp doesn't cover Cairo
This is the part to sort out before you book. According to the UK government's travel advice for Egypt (checked October 2026), British visitors who fly into Sharm El Sheikh and stay under 15 days in the Sinai resorts of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba receive a free entry permission stamp at the airport. If you travel outside those resorts, a full Egyptian visa is needed. Giza and Cairo are outside them, so for this trip you need the full visa, not the Sinai-only stamp. The same advice says it can be bought on arrival or applied for online as an e-visa.
Rules differ by nationality and can change, so check the official advice for your own passport before you travel: your government's travel pages, or the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your country. The simplest moment to get it right is on arrival at Sharm airport, by asking for a full visa rather than the free stamp. If you already have the stamp, ask your hotel or the operator what your options are before booking the trip.
How to make the long day work
- Shoes you can walk in all day. The plateau is sand and stone, and the museum is large.
- A hat and sunscreen. There is very little shade around the pyramids, in any season.
- Modest clothes. Shoulders and knees covered is respectful in markets and anywhere near a mosque, and practical in the sun.
- Your passport, for checkpoints and, on the flight ticket, the airport.
- Some cash in small notes for tips, water and the market. Haggling at the market is normal; smile and take your time.
- A charged phone and a power bank. It is a long day from one charger to the next.
Is it worth it from Sharm?
Honestly, it depends on what you want from the holiday. If the pyramids are on your list and Sharm is your only stop in Egypt, this is the realistic way to see them, and for many travellers the long night is worth that first sight of Giza. If you are here for a week of sea and sun with small children, a full day on the Ras Mohammed boat trip or a day in the mountains on the Canyon Salama trip may suit you better, and keep Cairo for another visit. Either way, read our guide to excursion prices in Sharm to see what is included in each kind of trip, and browse the rest of the things to do in Sharm El Sheikh.
